On dreams and beef and teeth.

dreams

Dreams, more often than not, are weird and bizarre.  However, that does not mean that dreams are useless.  As a matter of fact, dreams are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me.  Some are more easily and more readily adaptable to contemporary fiction than others, but I suppose that depends on the skills and talents of the writer.  For example, I had a porterhouse steak, bone in, for dinner.  I do not usually eat beef with bones, so consuming the meal proved difficult  Strands of beef wedged between my teeth and I sucked at them, employed toothpicks, and brushed my teeth numerous times to remove the bothersome food particles.  When I climbed into bed that night, I realized I had missed a few strands of meat and worried about it obsessively  before eventually falling asleep.

As a result, I think – I mean, I have no background in the study of dreams, psychology, or anything of the like, I had a dream about my teeth.  In the dream, one of my back teeth in the upper row was incredibly loose.  I was investigating the issue employing the plethora of mirrors in the family bathroom.  Gingerly, I touched the bottom ridges of the tooth and when it wiggled freely at the contact, I decided to yank on the tooth, just extract it from my mouth and be done with it.  Gripping the tooth firmly between my thumb and forefinger, I pulled with as much strength as I could muster.  Not only did I remove what might have been a bicuspid – maybe it was a canine? – but I also removed the whole inner half of my face, all the muscle, tissue and veins and oddly enough, it greatly resembled the porterhouse steak I had endeavored to eat for dinner.  Horrified, and clutching my recently removed innards in my hand, I rushed to my mother, begging for compassion and to be consoled.  All she said, in all her motherly wisdom, was, “Ain’t that something?”

Everyone, or a vast majority of everyone, makes a resolution come the new year.  My resolution, which is entirely unoriginal, is to lose 40 pounds and to have my teeth fixed, both of which I have already discussed in this blog.  To this list, I would also like to add being interviewed on the radio at least five times in order to promote my novel.  The easiest of those three aspirations is losing weight, as I have done it before and only need to rely on myself (which can be dangerous).  Correcting the issues with my teeth will technically be easy as well, but one must consider the timing conflict (ideal appoint times are usually during school hours) and the pain that is likely to ensue.  It will all be worth it, I’m sure, and both will be beneficial to the promotion of the novel.  In selling my novel, I am essentially selling myself, and I am offering the best me there is, both physically and mentally and emotionally and intellectually, then I believe I will encounter “no” far less often.

But I digress; the reason why I mentioned the resolutions is because I firmly intend to keep you updated on my progress.  Also, I read an article in the L.A. Times that describes 52 ways to blast your blubber; a different activity for every week of the year.  I will share these with you as well, in hopes that some of you will accompany on this journey and discuss your progress with me, as well as what proved most difficult.

Stay gold.  And keep dreaming, even if it breaks your heart.

On making resolutions halfway through the year.

Published June 3, 2012 by mandileighbean

We are nearly halfway through 2012.  I am truthfully dismayed to discover that I have not fulfilled a single resolution that I made the first day of the year.  Luckily, there is still time.

During what is left of 2012, I will:

  • lose 30 pounds
  • get two (2) tattoos
  • go to the dentist
  • not use my credit card
  • go to Barnes and Noble once a week
  • write everyday
  • practic French
  • learn more math
  • start painting
  • drink more tea
  • get my nails done regularly
  • take up yoga
  • take my GREs
  • read everyday
  • get hired as a full-time teacher
  • meet someone and fall in love
  • go to Alabama and see family
  • visit Jimmy at least once a month
  • be honest
  • dye my hair
  • look nice everyday
  • get my lip pierced
  • take a road trip
  • buy a car
  • go skydiving
  • see “50/50″ and “Midnight in Paris,” and other independent films
  • go to the theater and poetry readings – be cultured

What are you going to do?

On making progress.

I haven’t made it official by consulting my blog’s statistics, but I do believe that “On being worse than teenage poetry” is my most popular entry thus far! That being said, I am clearly going to revisit that topic and include similar posts in the future. I would like to take this opporunity to thank every single person who read it and enjoyed it, regardless of whether or not you commented. It means the world to me that my writing has the ability to help me connect with people I have never met. That, my friends, is what it is all about, and why I really became a writer – to connect, only connect, just like E.M. Forrester wrote in the beginning of Howard’s End (which is an AWESOME read, by the way).

And speaking of reading, have any of you gotten a chance to read Fifty Shades of Gray? I’ve been hearing mixed reviews, but am truly tempted to see what all the buzz is about. It was highly and adamantly recommended by a colleague, so I feel an obligation to check it out. Currently, I’m reading four books: Jane Eyre, Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda, Broke and Elixir.  Operation Anaconda is the true account of a military operation during the war in Afghanistan and Broke is Glenn Beck’s take on the current economical crisis.  Jane Eyre is an old favorite and Elixir is Hilary Duff’s first novel, which was recommended and then lent to me by a student. I’m enjoying all of them, the first two because I feel I am broadening my interests and educating myself. What are you reading?

This weekend was hectic, but also productive. My gradebook is all caught up, and I’ve printed progress reports for my students. :) The trick now is remembering to hand them out. Also, I spent a lot of time with my family, and it was enjoyable, incredible and remarkable. I highly recommend spending more time with those that matter most.

Okay. So, truth be told, I am NOT crazy about the prompt for tonight, but hey: it gets me writing and thinking, and that’s what matters most.

Enjoy.  :)

PROMPT: Most of us set a New Year’s resolution that this was going to be the year we finished our manuscript. But once again, we neglected it. Write an apology letter to your manuscript explaining what happened and how you plan to make it up to the manuscript by December 31.

Dear Second Manuscript,

I am terribly sorry I have yet to get us off to a roaring start, let alone a stellar finish.  My first manuscript is settled and in the midst of the publishing process and yet, I feel unable to move on and leave the plot and characters behind.  Perhaps it is that reluctance that has prevented me from entering into what I am sure will be a whirlwind romance with you.  I imagine the ups and downs, and am enthralled.  Honestly, there is nothing I desire more than to start anew with you.  Every sinew, every pulse and every heart beat is screaming for something new, for an original passion that will make me feel less ordinary and less stagnant.

But where to begin?

Maybe you could help? Offer an idea, or intriguing phrase that will serve as the launching pad for the next great American novel?

Forever yours,

Mandi
